IRIS-NodeBB Forum

Overview

Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much” – Helen Keler

Drawing inspiration from various product platforms, IRIS-NodeBB Forum is the gateway to unite all the sections of the NITK student community and build a stronger close-knit peer environment under a community-driven discussion platform. This has been made possible by integrating NodeBB, one of the leading free and open source third-party forum software with IRIS.

Why Forum?

IRIS-NodeBB Forum has been built to achieve the goal of bringing together the varied passions, knowledge and experience of NITK students under an umbrella medium that would promote sharing of ideas, opinions and suggestions among users. In a world where billions of opportunities and uncertainties exist, this new product serves as the perfect recipe to share and gain perspective, to make one’s college life more fruitful.

The Forum environment gathers all the alumni, B.Tech, M.Tech, Ph.D, M.Sc and MBA students together, thereby ensuring that the needs and interests of all the community members are met. The long term vision of this product is to enable students to have healthy conversations regarding a wide range of topics such as academics, sports, student activities and clubs, current affairs, career guidance, etc.,.

The first version of Forum has seven channels:

This channel pertains to anything with respect to IRIS. This is the best avenue for students to actively involve with Team IRIS and make requests and suggestions for improvements and new products. Problems faced by students while using IRIS can be brought up here. The issues raised shall be handled actively by the IRIS Product team.

  1. Your username should only consist of your name and initials if any. Do not include your roll number or registration number in the username. Any other username will be reported to the admin.
  2. Keep the discussion on topic and civil, and in the correct channels.
  3. Advertising or self promotion is not allowed. Engage in community discussion
  4. Do not post copyrighted material.
  5. Do not post “offensive” content, links or images. The discussions on the forum are meant to stimulate conversation, not to create contention.
  6. Do not post personal information of any person on this Forum.
  7. Do not cross post questions or discussion topics i.e. posting the same content on multiple channels.
  8. Please refrain from using any language other than English.
  9. Remain respectful of other members at all times.
  10. State concisely and clearly the topic of your comments in the subject line. This allows members to respond more appropriately to your posting and makes it easier for members to search the archives by subject.
  11. Personal attacks or comments on any student/ faculty or institute official will not be tolerated. Topics related to politics, religion, race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, disabilities or any immoral/ illegal practices are not allowed.
  12. Failure to adhere to the rules will result in a suspension (1 week). Users will be informed about the same by the moderators. Three suspensions will result in a permanent ban. However, in grave instances, moderators and admin have the right to permanently ban the user without imposing a suspension.
  13. It shall be noted that the forum is a medium for all the users to express their personal opinion, ideas, suggestions, etc., and IRIS NITK shall not be held responsible and accountable in case of any violation of the code of conduct.

User Responsibility

As a member of the community it is important that every user understands his/her responsibility towards other individuals. It is the duty of every member to build an environment on the pillars of trust, politeness and good faith. The Forum is a medium that mutually benefits all the users and hence, it is necessary to uphold the spirit of togetherness always. There is a need for conscious effort from everyone involved to avoid destructive criticism and displeasure. The ultimate goal of this initiative can be achieved only when all the members are comfortable in voicing their queries, suggestions and opinions.

The Forum is here to stay and ensure collective progress only when we as “responsible community members” understand its immense potential and use it in a smart, sensible manner.

Into the Future . . .

Currently, the Forum is open only to the students of NITK. A small but significant step has been taken by introducing a variety of channels.  However, the capabilities of “Community Strength” are boundless. Channels for other topics and domains are in the pipeline. The possibility of opening up the Forum to the other stakeholders of NITK is also being explored.
